Islam: The Basics Bismillah(With the Guidance of Allah)

The Five Pillars(Duties) of Islam

1. Shahadah(the declaration of faith)

There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.

2. Salah(prayer)

The five mandatory daily prayers and the time period in which they are performed are:
i. Fajr or Subh(Daybreak or Morning) from the appearance of the first light of dawn 'til the sun splits the horizon.
ii. Zuhr(midday) just after midday 'til late afternoon(calculated by the sun's position)
iii. Asr(evening) late afternoon 'til the sun meets the horizon
iv. Maghrib(West) just after sunset 'til complete nightfall
v. Isha(night) from darkness 'til the first light of dawn

3. Sawm(fasting)

Muslims mandatorily fast during the month of Ramadan. Islamic fasting means no food, water, or any substance(except medicines)from the first light of dawn 'til the complete darkness after sunset.

4. Zakah(almsgiving)

Muslims who are financially-able should donate their time and money to the less fortunate of the Muslim community. Donation is voluntary, but encouraged.

5. Hajj(pilgrimage)

All financially-able Muslims should make a pilgrimage to Al-Kabah, Baitullah(The House of Allah)in Mecca, Saudi Arabia once during their life.

The Seven Beliefs of Islam
1. Allah. There is one almighty being who created the universe. He has no partners, offspring, or equals. In the universe there is Allah and His creations.

2. Al-Qadr(predestination). Allah knows everything that has and will ever happen in the universe.

3. Katabullah(the Books of Allah). As Muslims we believe in all of the revelations Allah has sent to mankind. These include The Torah of Moses, The Psalms of David, The Gospel of Jesus, and the Qur'an.

4. Rusulallah(the messengers of Allah). Allah has sent prophets to every nation of people on Earth. From Adam to Muhammad, we believe and love the prophets equally.

5. Mala'ikah(the Angels). Allah created angels to intermediate with humans. Angels have no free will, do not tire, and exist only to serve Allah.

6. Yawmiddin(literally the day of religion). The day when we will all be repayed for what we have done during our lifetime. If good outweighs bad, you go to Paradise. Vice versa you go to Hell.

7. Akhirah(life after death) Paradise or Hell.
